   Resistance leader A celebrated figure of the French resistance during World War II, Pierre-Georges Fabien, or le colonel Fabien as he is known, was born in Paris and was a member of the French communist party. He joined the Resistance early and helped to create the armed youth battalions (batallions armés de la jeunesse). He also organized the action in the Paris subway (Métro) that took the life of a Nazi German officer (August 21, 1941). A resistance group lead-der, then chief of a brigade of FFI (free French) in the Île-de-France, Colonel Fabien was killed during the campaign in Alsace, fighting within the ranks of the First French Army.
